"My first rally was in 4th of January 1981 that was called Rebecca-Rally in Jämsä. My contest ended to a snowdrift. I drove a Datsun 1600, group 2. My co-driver was Alpo Vilmilä. I drove with this car yet three rallies, even one to finish." |
|
"By the end of the year -81, I bought a Ford Escort RS, group 1. Co-driver was Juha Vannesluoma. I drove junior cup with variable success in total five contests, where my best position was second in my class. I got some good stage times, but I was going to quit rallying in spring -82, because I couldn´t reach top times. But then I decided to change car once more to a good rally car, a Ford Escort RS2000 a real group 1 rally car. Alpo Vilmilä and Kari Talonen as co-drivers."

"My first rally with this car was Joutsenlampi Rally in November -82 and I won straight away, 1st overall by less than a minute. Next year I drove 19 contests, 17 wins, one second place and one third. So I won Junior Finnish championship, though unofficial. I also gained Finnish "Junior-King" title. I gathered the most rising points to overall class."

"In 1984 I got to drive in overall class and I drove an Opel Ascona (co-drivers Kari Talonen and Asko Sairanen). As a result one first place plus other good placings. I got a scholarship to the Rally of Thousand Lakes in Jyväskylä in year -84, but I drove heavily off the road. My best classifications in year -85 were 7th overall in Artic Rally and 10th in Hankiralli. I led the group A in summer, but I had to retire in the rest of the year´s rallies due to technical problems. The best thing was to win the Scandinavian Team Championship, which was driven in South Swedish Rally on 16th - 18th of May. In October we drove with Asko Köln-Ahrweiler Rally in Germany and the car was the same Opel Ascona, but the car´s technique failed us again in the middle of the rally." |

"In 1986 Isko Rally (2nd overall), Aku Rally (3rd overall and fastest rear-wheel drive). For the Rally of Thousand Lakes I had an Audi 80 Quattro (co-drivers that year Asko Sairanen and Ilkka Isännäinen), but I had to retire due to technical problems. In May I and Asko were in former Soviet Union to drive 1st Old Tomas Rally with Lada VFTS (group B). We retired, from favourite position, on stage eight. The rear broke. In -87, I drove with the same Audi 80 Quattro. Final classification of Finnish Championship was 6th in group A that year. Co-driver was Kari Takaneva.
In May we, Asko and I attended the 2nd Old Tomas Rally with Lada (in former Soviet Union). This time we had to retire on the last stage due to engine break down. In October we headed to Germany. We took part in Dei Städte Rally with Audi, but we drove off the road and had to retire."

"1988 I got an Audi Coupe Quattro (co-drivers Asko Sairanen, Pertti Lehtonen, and Markku Kauppila). The best placing in Finnish Championship was 3rd overall. But I didn´t drive every rally in the series. In May we (Asko and I) took part in Tomas Rally in Tallinn. We drove again Lada, but the car disappointed us again and we didn´t get to finish line.
In October we left to Germany, Dei Städte Rally, this time with a Audi Coupe Quattro. Position was 13th overall. Year 1989 I still drove with the Audi Coupe Quattro. I participated in few rounds of the Finnish Championship and all the contests, which belonged to Million Rally series. Placing was 12th and co-driver was Make Kauppila. The Old Tomas rally was again in May and I and Asko drove that with the Audi. We retired on stage 16. A tyre blew up and the car rebounded from a stone to the forest. In October we were in Germany again and the rally was Köln-Ahrweiler Rally. At this time the car was new, an Audi 200 Quattro. But unfortunately we retired, because the technique failed."
